What did we work on in 2024? From big prototyping improvements, new tools like the Command Bar and Minimap to a complete web app UI refresh — there’s lots to cover! Let’s take a look at everything we shipped this year.

  2. Smart Animate

Smart Animate looks for layers with the same name across different Artboards and animates their changes. If you’ve used Magic Move in Keynote, you’ll pick this up fast! You can control movement and timing with easing and duration options — for Smart Animate and all other transitions. There’s also another new transition type — dissolve — which adds a smooth fade between Artboards or Overlays.

  3. A cleaner, fresher web app UI

Following our refresh of the web app’s document view, we’ve given the rest of the UI a redesign as well. Along with a new font (Inter, if you’re wondering), we’ve also redesigned the sidebar, overhauled settings with dedicated pages, and improved the hierarchy of project, document, and collection thumbnails.

  4. Export any asset from the web app

Developers using the web app for handoff can now export any layer in a document without it being set to export in the Mac app first. They’ll have full control over things like size/scale, format and file naming conventions — all within the browser and on the fly.

  5. Scroll areas in prototypes

Make your prototypes scroll in any direction — from a simple row of cards, to a full size map. Set up scroll areas in seconds and adjust them right on the Canvas.

  6. Hover, press and toggle triggers

We’ve added new hover and press interactions, alongside the classic tap/click. Use these to trigger overlays, or even hide or show specific layers (that’s also new with this update). There’s also a new toggle option to show and hide a layer or overlay with each click or tap.

  7. Add comments to prototypes

You can now can view and add comments while playing prototypes — right in the web browser — with no need to switch back to the design. Great for gathering feedback without interrupting anyone’s flow.

  8. Command Bar

Press K in any document to open the Command Bar and quickly access tools, actions, and plugins. Over time, it will learn your preferences and bring your most-used actions to the top of the search results.

  9. Minimap

Find your way around fast on an infinite Canvas. The Minimap will appear whenever you have layers outside your view, and show you exactly where you are in the current document. Simply click and drag on it to pan around.

  10. Inspect from full Canvas view

You can now inspect designs in the web app with all the context that comes from the full Canvas view. Open up a design in your browser, click the Inspect icon and select whatever you need, right on the Canvas.

  11. Export Design Tokens

In addition to Color Tokens, you can now export Layer Styles and Text Styles as Design Tokens — right from the web app. You can download your design tokens, or create an always-up-to-date public link for them.
