When trying to save a Sketch file, you may see a message saying that the file could not be saved. There are several reasons why this could happen. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can follow:
On this page
1. Check the permissions settings in the target folder
When saving a file in Sketch, certain system settings can prevent the app from completing the action. One potential cause is folder permissions. Follow these steps to check and adjust folder permissions:
- Open Finder and locate the folder where you’re trying to save your file.
- Select the folder and press ⌘I to open the Get Info window.
- In the window that appears, scroll to the Sharing & Permissions section:
- Ensure your user account has Read & Write access to the folder.
- If needed, click the lock icon to unlock and make changes.
If the folder is part of a Cloud storage service (like Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive), these platforms may have their own permission settings or syncing rules that can impact saving files. Check the folder’s specific settings in the Cloud service or consult your IT team if necessary.
2. Grant permissions to Sketch and your storage service app
If the folder had the correct permissions and the problem persists, check the permissions that Sketch and your Storage Service app have:
- Open Finder and on the menu bar select System Settings > Privacy & Security then select Files and Folders on the left panel.
- To make changes here, click on the lock icon in the bottom-left corner of the window and enter your username and password (or one for an administrator on your machine) in the prompt that appears.
- Once you have selected Files and Folders, look for both Sketch and the Storage Service app you are using on the right panel and make sure all boxes are checked.
- If there were unchecked boxes, check them, go back to Sketch, quit the App, relaunch it and try saving again.
3. Grant Sketch full disk access
- Open Finder and on the menu bar select System Settings > Privacy & Security then select Full Disk Access on the left panel.
- To make changes here, click on the lock icon in the bottom-left corner of the window and enter your username and password (or one for an administrator on your machine) in the prompt that appears.
- Select Sketch from the list of applications that appears and choose Open, then tick the checkbox next to it.
Note: The names of the settings in macOS may vary depending on the version you’re using. In newer versions, it’s called System Settings and Privacy & Security, while in older versions, it is System Preferences and Security & Privacy. Please adjust accordingly based on your macOS version.
4. Security rules affecting the Sketch web app
If after you can’t save a Document to the Sketch web app, the security settings may be blocking it. Some companies have security settings in place to restrict access to certain folders or files, which can prevent Sketch from saving or uploading.
To fix this, ensure Sketch has the right permissions to access your files. You may need to adjust your macOS or network security settings to allow the Sketch web app to save files. In that case, please reach out to your IT department for further support.
All of these troubleshooting steps should be able to assist you, but if you do have further issues, please get in touch.
